6 Simple Hand Hygiene Tips to Minimise Your Risk of Getting Sick

Global Handwashing Day is celebrated annually on the 15th of October to raise awareness on the importance of hand hygiene. This campaign also motivates good personal hygiene practices as it is a key approach to disease prevention

According to the National Vaccine Information Center, 80% of infectious diseases like influenza are transmitted through touch. And with proper hand and personal hygiene practices, the risk of being infected with respiratory diseases can be minimised by 16%. 

Germs and harmful bacteria are known to inhibit on the most unsuspecting items like your mobile phone, so here are some quick hygiene tips that can help to reduce your visits to the doctor. 

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water as handwashing is one of the top defenses to protect yourself against germs. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with soap and be sure to scrub the back of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. 
  • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them because wet hands can spread up to 1,000 times more germs. 
  • Sanitise your hands with alcohol-based sanitisers as it helps to kill 99% of germs on your hands. 
  • Cover your nose and mouth with tissue when you sneeze or cough. Dispose it properly after use and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. 
  • Clean your phones, keyboard and mouse with sanitising wipes to reduce bacterial growth.
